While inflation has afflicted Americans of every age, senior citizens are often in a more difficult predicament because many live off fixed incomes. Many depend heavily on Social Security – some 42% of elderly women and 37% of elderly men rely on the monthly payments for at least half their income, according to the Social Security Administration. They aren’t wrong: Inflation has eaten away at 36% of Social Security benefits’ buying power since 2000, according to an analysis last year from The Senior Citizens League. Rose Almond is a fully self-employed freelance engineer after resigning from her office job in 2015. She has also done freelance work through Upwork. Her total revenue from her self-employed work in 2023 was around 65,400 Canadian dollars, or over $47,500. Almond has found that "the lack of face-to-face interaction" that comes with freelance work can sometimes get lonely. Freelance work has now given Almond a chance to explore another work goal.

On a Monday in mid-March, the Wisconsin Republican Party gathered about 50 conservative activists on a Zoom call to train them in how to become poll workers, helping oversee and monitor the casting and counting of votes. Heavily Democratic areas of the battleground state were a key focus. “Eau Claire, Madison, Milwaukee — that type,” Mike Hoffman, the state party’s election integrity director, said as he ticked off places being targeted. “We’re keeping a close eye on you,” he recounted telling one city clerk, according to audio recordings of the party’s training sessions obtained by The New York Times. They will focus on every aspect of voting, including mail ballots, voting machines and post-Election Day recounts and audits.
